Trudeau Leaves Canada in Suspense Amid Anxious Calls for His Resignation

Trudeau Leaves Canada in Suspense as Anxious Liberals Urge Him to Go

The Holiday Period is Over, and Canadian Politics is Gripped by a Single Question: When Will Justin Trudeau Announce His Decision?

The holiday period has come to an end, and Canadian politics are now focused on one pressing question: when will Prime Minister Justin Trudeau make his decision about the future of Canada? The Liberal Party is under immense pressure to have a clear plan in place as the party’s polling numbers continue to slide. A recent survey by Nanos Research shows that the Conservative Party has taken the lead going into an election year.

Trudeau Disappears from Public View

Since December 16, when Chrystia Freeland, his finance minister and former ally, resigned with a scathing public letter criticizing him, Prime Minister Trudeau has largely disappeared from public view. The lack of communication from the prime minister’s office has only fueled speculation about his future plans.

Anxious Liberals Urge Him to Make a Decision

The Liberal Party is now calling on Trudeau to make a decision and communicate it to the party and the country. Nik Nanos, founder of Nanos Research, believes that the longer Trudeau waits to address both his party and the country, the more he risks provoking a Liberal rebellion.

The Risks of Delaying a Decision

Nanos warns that if the polling numbers hold up in an election, the Liberals would lose most of their 153 seats. The party has launched pre-election advertising focusing on concern about how the Conservatives will cut social programs. However, it would be challenging for the Liberals to smoothly transition to new leadership due to the precarious hold the Trudeau government has on parliament.

A Leadership Race and Its Challenges

A Liberal leadership race may take three months to run or even longer under different circumstances. Even if the Liberals can avoid a forced election during a leadership contest, the winner would have a relatively short period of time before being thrown into a national campaign. To ensure continuity in government, Trudeau could resign but say he’s staying in office while a leadership race takes place.

The Road Ahead for the Liberal Party

Regardless of what happens next, the Liberal Party faces a difficult road ahead. Even with a new leader, the party would need a major turnaround in public opinion to save most of its seats, let alone hold onto government.
